It was probably the worst night’s sleep John had ever had in his life. The smell of moth balls and rat droppings were infused in a ragged time worn sleeping bag the old man had lent him, it was a stench that would stay imprinted in his mind for years to come.

His back sore, legs stiff and his neck wrenched, he sat upwards to take in his dim surroundings. Propping himself on his arms, he tried to roll his neck in circles to rid the cramping sensation he was feeling.

Staring up through a hole in the old barn roof, John took in the view of the morning stars as they sparkled. He would be interrupted by a sound he only heard in movies and on television, this would be the first time he ever heard it in person, again the sound came closer.

“Rattlesnake!” John screamed as he jumped to his feet. The others stirred all weary eyed, watched as John ran for the barn door.

“Rattlesnake…Rattlesnake…get out of here!”

The others jumping and stumbling followed John out of the barn. John flung open the door only to find the old man sitting on the trunk of the car laughing. Tripping over each other as they all tried to exit the barn at the same time. They found themselves crashing together and falling in a pile for the old man’s amusement.

“You city boys never have been in the desert before have you?” Garrett chuckled. “Welcome to the home of rattlers and scorpions.”

Atsa walked from behind the barn shaking a rattler toy made from an actual snake, with a smirk on his face he said, “Good morning.”

“What kind of sick joke is this?” John grumbled.

“Not a joke…a wakeup call. Breakfast in thirty minutes, you boys go get cleaned up before breakfast,” Garrett said as he slumped down off the trunk and hobbled back towards the house. The guys still lying in the dirt could hear the old man laugh as he walked with Atsa in tow.

“I think I broke my toe,” Rob said.

“I think I pissed myself,” Frank said.

Cleaned and ready for breakfast, they joined the others in the house. Both Thomas and Little John asleep at the table only to be awaken by the old man smacking his cane on the leg of the table, urging them to wake up and sit up straight.

Bobby and John spent breakfast informing the old man of their situation, talking about the discovery and who had been chasing them. He sat intently listening, pausing to sip his coffee and clear his throat, he wouldn’t speak but only grunt as if he understood.

Lora would work around the bunch, placing food in the center of the table, helping the kids prepare their plates. She actually enjoyed taking care of the kids, but wouldn’t dare admit it to any of them. She didn’t mind the men, except for Garrett who no matter what he said, rubbed her the wrong way. He was stuck in an era of time’s past, women had long ago burnt their bras for equality, she wanted to place hers on his head and light it.
